Why you should switch to a natural deodorant (And throw your old one away)!
Deodorant is an important part of getting ready. Every day we clean our teeth, brush our hair, do our skincare, and then blast ourselves with deodorant in an attempt to get ourselves smelling fresh. So, shouldn’t the deodorant we rely on daily actually be reliable? Traditional store-bought deodorants come with a plethora of potential drawbacks such as causing irritated skin, staining clothing, and even making your body odour worse! Um, no thank you!?
It might be time to axe the traditional brand name aerosol deo sprays and go for something a little more natural.
Sweating gets a lot of hate for something that is completely natural. When you break down its composition it's just a mixture of salt and water. Yes, it can smell ungodly, especially after smashing out a session at the gym but it’s just your body's way of expelling toxins and regulating your temperature. Two very important jobs! This happens when sweat is released through your pores and then evaporating off your skin, letting it cool down. Store-bought deodorants, especially ones marked antiperspirants, are infested with chemicals. Specifically aluminium which is used to block your pores to stop your sweat. Blocking your pores stops you from sweating properly and causes a build-up underneath the skin. This can lead to skin bumps and irritation. To top it all off, it won’t guarantee that you won’t smell.
The smell from sweat is a reaction that happens when it mixes with the pre-existing natural bacteria living on your skin. It happens to everyone. However, if you decide to use a traditional deodorant this smell can become a whole lot worse. This is because it causes a build-up of chemicals and aluminium on your skin which is then mixed with the pre-existing bacteria and makes your body odour sour smelling. This toxic aluminium blocking your pores can also react to the chemicals in your clothes and create those horrible yellow sweat-stains. Gross!
There are ample health benefits that come with choosing a natural deodorant such as our NO GUNK Natural Deodorant Balm. It’s one of the best natural deodorants made right here in the UK. For starters, our products contain all natural ingredients instead of using chemicals like aluminium so you can say goodbye to blocked pores and yellow stains! Not only that but studies have linked the absorption of aluminium through your skin to cases of Alzhiemers and Breast Cancer. As an alternative, we use ingredients like coconut oil which is odour absorbing and have antibacterial properties. There are also no harsh chemical fragrances and we opt for neutralising odours with subtler and more natural scents such as Musk and Citrus. Not only are natural deodorants better for your body but they are also better for the environment. At NO GUNK we store our deodorants in metal tins and are 100% plastic-free making it much easier to recycle but the ingredients are also natural, ethically and sustainably sourced.
When you decide to make the switch from your store-bought deodorant to something more natural we recommend you take a few days to let your body get through the adjustment period. It normally takes a few days for your body to get used to moving from chemical aluminium based deodorants to natural deodorants. In simple terms, your body is going through a detox and will eventually get to the point where the natural deodorants are providing you with the same efficiency. During this time you should focus on showering and exfoliating (something you should be doing at least once a week! Ahem!) to remove that toxin build up which was created from repeatedly using traditional deodorant over the years. We recommend using our exfoliating shower glove which is great for scrubbing off any dead skin, toxins, and debris, leaving your body feeling baby smooth and rejuvenated. By using the best organic and natural products, you can always ensure that your skin is happy, healthy, and smelling great.
If you want to take things a step further and create the best environment for your armpits try switching up your wardrobe and invest in fabrics with natural fibers. We’re talking about clothing made out of cotton, hemp and, for the bougie fella, silk. The majority of clothing is made with polyester and acrylics which trap moisture and can result in a bad smell. Talk about a turn off.
